Did you know that flamingos aren’t always pink? They’re born as these fluffy little grey birds, which you could honestly mistake for any other baby bird. As they grow and mature, their soft down makes way for those iconic bright pink feathers. What can we say, we love flamingos! But the most interesting thing we learned about them is something we learnt just last week. Flamingos lose their pink colouring at one other point in their life, and you’ll never guess what it is.
A Flamingo Biology Lesson
As we mentioned, earlier, flamingos aren’t born with their bright pink plumage. It develops over time thanks to their unique diet of brine shrimp and blue-green algae – a food which would likely kill other animals by the way. Their colour is particularly important during mating season. The brighter and pinker they are, the better at foraging, and so it’s easier to attract a mate. Once the mating dance is done (go and look that up on YouTube, it’s quite stunning!), hopefully, a chick is brought into the world.
This is where the second loss of colour happens. Raising a chick is so intensive, and so much of their food goes to their chick, that that lovely pink colour just drains away. They’ll stay a grey/white colour until the chick is self-sufficient, at which point it all comes flooding back.
What’s This Got To Do With Business?
At this point, you might think we’ve gone a bit mad. But bear with us.
When you first start a business, you’re a flamingo with a freshly hatched chick, pouring all of your time, money and energy into keeping it alive and helping it grow. You’re wearing all of the hats in the business, probably doing more than you should to keep things going. It’s easy to lose yourself and eat a little bit grey!
One of the biggest areas many business owners struggle with is admin. Business admin can be an enormous amount of effort, and it’s all too easy to fall behind on. In fact, when we talk to business owners, admin is their number 1 complaint!
